Memorials are a way to remind people that something happened there in the past that you would not be able to perceive otherwise. In that sense, they are a way of making invisible borders visible. In this video, two memorials in the city of Budapest are compared, each representing a different type of memorializing: the ostentatious, state-sanctioned memorial complexes that tell official versions of history versus the quietly tragic memorials that elicit self-reflection and private, real emotion.
